How to Find a Puncture in an Inflatable Boat

No matter how well you take care of it, or try to prevent holes or tears, an inflatable boat will, from time to time, develop leaks. Leaks can occur when a valve has broken, the boat has scraped something sharp, or something has punctured the hull. Finding the source of the leak can be a time-consuming task, but doing so only requires a few common household supplies, as well as a great deal of patience.
  • Things You'll Need
  • Bucket
  • Water
  • Liquid soap
  • Soft rag
  • Soft brush

Instructions

  • Fully inflate the boat as much as possible.
  • Combine liquid soap and water in your bucket.
  • Use your rag or brush to coat the boat with soapy water. Do a section at a time, to ensure complete coverage. Also, be sure to slather the soapy water along all the seams.
  • Watch for bubbles to appear on the surface. The source of these bubbles, escaping air, marks the site of the leak.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure you check closely around the valves and seams, as these are common areas for leaks.
  • Alternately, you can listen closely for the source of the leak. This may be an alternative if using soapy water produces no results.
